The Portia Learning Centre Community Outreach Program
A joint effort between Autism Ontario Realize Community Potential Programme, Portia Learning Centre, QuickStart -Early Intervention for Autism, Here We Play Again, and Gymboree Play and Music has brought an exciting new free service to Ottawa.
Portia Learning Centre will provide highly trained ABA therapists and they will also have a Senior Therapist on site. Therapists will answer questions during the individual appointments specific to the child's needs. They will demonstrate effective teaching techniques to promote language acquisition and behavioural procedures.
Autism Ontario is providing funding and information kits. They will be on hand to answer questions and to provide resources for families.
This programme is designed for children 6 and under. However, if your child is over 6 and you would like to consult with an ABA therapist, please attend one of the clinics that is held at the Portia Learning Centre sites.
When you arrive, there will be a sign up sheet to book your half hour session with a therapist. After you register, you will then proceed to the play area with your child. You will be called when a therapist is ready for you. Nancy & Marlene (French), from Autism Ontario and Suzanne, from QuickStart will be available to speak with you and offer support.
Families are welcome to use the play facility around their session. Please note that this is not a drop off programme but one where parents stay with their child. Parents are also welcome to come on their own to ask questions, meet with a therapist or pick up resource material.
The September drop in programme will operate on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 1:30 and 4:30 between four Ottawa locations. Half hour appointments will be allocated on a first come, first serve basis. Families are welcome to attend more than one session.
